Experimental Phrase (On-site)

Keywords : captivate, detained, acceptance

From analyzing the narratives of Phra Aphai Mani and its dramaturgy, we decided to take the story as inspiration for constructing our own story telling; as the literature piece itself contains several aspects worth discussing and elaborating.

“Phra Aphai Mani”, whom character reflects the lives of us, foreign students abroad, seeking for acceptance from family (or even in the scale of the society), driven by passion, detained and suppressed by the higher power of the Ogress in the cave, takes on as our inspiration point as symbolism.

The composition is narrated into 6 acts as follows:

Act 1

  • In search of Knowledge / Finding one’s shadows

(Inspired by the acts in which Phra Aphai Mani, leaves his city in search for master schools for the subjects he has passion in)

Act 2

  • Life driven by passion / Igniting light in one’s soul

(Phra Aphai Mani, as a new graduate, full of passion and joy)

Act 3

  • Disappointment / Unaccepted and looked down on

(Coming back to his city, and faced the unacceptance from his parents and having to leave town, as his passion and knowledge is found to be useless to his designated role)

Act 4

  • Isolation / Detained in the Cave / Suppressed by the higher power

(Phra Aphai Mani, abducted by the Sea Ogress, and detained in the cave. He had the power to play his magic flute, to kill the Ogress and escape but chose not to. Was this caused by fear of this higher power of the Ogress?

Act 5

  • Flee / Finding new hopes

(Phra Aphai Mani flees the cave with his son, Sinsamut with the help of the merfolk’s family, to the Magic Island of wonder and multi-culture)

Act 6

  • Longing / feelings linger towards the past

(Phra Aphai Mani thinks of his past, his life back in the cave and surely, the Ogress)

According to our interpretation, Phra Aphai Mani and the Sea Ogress tend to be the same character, one physically present and the other tend to be the body of fear.

The story would be narrated by one character as according to our interpretation (Phra Aphai Mani and the Sea Ogress), performed by two performers, symbolizing the conscious and the subconscious.
